Unfurling is a collection of my new abstract paintings exhibited at Becroft Gallery in Lake House Arts Centre, Takapuna, drawing inspiration from the summer nightly walks I took with my parents as a five year old when jasmines bloomed, lily pads floated and fireflies glowed. Leaning into my imagination and vaporous memories, UNFURLING recaptures a time and space of belonging and magic through exploration of abstract language. Blending the Soak-Stain method pioneered by 20th-century female abstract artist Helen Frankenthaler with Asian water-ink tradition which I grew up with, UNFURLING is mesmerising and rich in storytelling, colour, transparent layers, water marks and brushworks.

As we unfurl, we are like butterflies emerging from the comfort of belonging. We step into our light and enter an expansive space. We morph into the being we’ve always been, with our wings thrusted into the freedom of wonder and possibilities.
