DANCING IN THE DEEP
Dancing in the Deep is about finding our balance, rhythm and music in this large life with all its exciting wild and unknown we’ve been called to. We have answered the call, we have emerged from the chrysalis, we have stepped into the water. But now we feel the waves are a bit too strong, the challenges and tensions are a bit too intense and we have lost our control and equilibrium. Are we enough for this? Perhaps our dreams and desires are too big? Could we go back to the little cocoon where things are familiar and manageable?
Dancing in the Deep is a message of peace, hope and strength for those who have stepped into the water. The waves might be big, but what calls us into the ocean is bigger and greater and will sustain us and send us flames of joy and peace to safeguard us and propell us. We are never alone in this wild and unknown. Someone wiser, stronger and infinitely in love with us is always with us, calming the waves and lifting us to a clear horizon.
The impetus of the painting came from a song “Peace Be Still”. When Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, in distress and concern, I heard a song called Peace Be Still. It’s beautiful:
“...Peace be still
Say the word and I will
Set my feet upon the sea
Till I'm dancing in the deep
Peace be still…”
As the lyrics flowed out with the music, an image of a woman dancing in the waves emerged in my mind. I felt it’s saying we are not to turn away from the waves but to face the waves and dance inside. Because Peace will be with us and we have no need to fear.
As the painting evolved in the process, I feel the woman has different layers of meaning. She could represent us individuals finding our footing in our exhilarating challenges and tensions. She could be the angel bringing fire from heaven to help and empower us. Either way, her gaze is not upon the tall waves, but beyond the waves on the eternal source of strength and peace that is much bigger and more powerful and cares about us infinitely.
I chose the yellow and blue colour palette for this painting to honour the brave spirit of the Ukrainian people and may peace and blessings come to the nations.
