MAGNOLIA DREAMTIME - People's Choice Award/Kumeu Art Awards 2021
MAGNOLIA DREAMTIME
The beautiful magnolia species are many people’s favourites and they truly deserve a closer observation and depiction. The idea of this piece germinated during the second Auckland lockdown in 2020 which just provided ample time to concentrate and paint — for which I’m grateful!!! On the first day of this second lockdown I went to the Auckland Botanical Gardens. And what delight and surprise were waiting for me!! All the variety of magnolia were in bloom and they are like stars decking the whole park. I bathed in their glory and took massive amounts of photos.
I chose this particular composition because I love to create deep space in a painting by contrasting the larger blooms in the foreground and the tiny ones in the background. I also love the eye movement and rhythm created by the intersection and placement of branches and flower. I love how I altered the tree trunk colours to a bluish tone and added an imaginary water pool … I think this created a quiet dreamy feel that draws the spirit to a peaceful place!
