SPRING RHAPSODY I

SPRING RHAPSODY is created as one of my New Zealand flora series. I have always been mesmerised by Wisteria, mostly because my mother, a premier artist in Taiwan, loved to paint wisteria in the medium of Chinese watercolour. She traveled near and far to capture the beauty of wisteria. and presented them in exquisite portrait paintings. Here in New Zealand, wisteria is often seen climbing and twining along house fences and in botanical gardens. I love how the clusters of purple and violet flowers droop exuberantly like waterfall. It is like torrents of bliss, life, joy and tenderness cascading out of the floodgate of heaven.

This painting is created after trips to Auckland Botanical Garden and many photos taken of the wisteria growing in my neighbourhood of West Auckland. Again, I introduced an imaginary emerald lake into the background, symbolic of rejuvenation and mystery of life. I used many shades of purple, violet, blue, pink to reflect how the flowers interact with the sunlight. The light green of the new leaves represents new birth and springtime.
