VERDANT REBIRTH

Verdant Rebirth draws inspiration from a serendipitous encounter with a natural wonder known as “Suibotsurin” in Japanese (水沒林) , or “the Submerged Forest”, experienced during a recent visit to my mother’s hometown in Akita, Japan. Suibotsurin occurs between late May and early June at Lake Shusen, following the melting of thick winter snow from the mountaintops, which inundates the lake. This phenomenon engulfs yanagi trees, submerging them up to their trunks, creating an illusion of them floating and sprouting directly from the deep teal waters. Against the backdrop of lush mountains and lake waters, the emergence of fresh young foliage forms a vibrant tapestry of springtime greens, evoking an overwhelming sense of peace. The painting captures the essence of grace that empowers us to emerge and be reborn in the face of life’s challenges, signaling the renewal of life and dreams.

This painting is crafted using acrylic and soft pastel on raw canvas, fusing the soak-stain technique pioneered by the 20th century American abstract expressionist Helen Frankenthaler with the artistic traditions of Asian water-ink that have been a cherished part of my upbringing.
